Lessons to be learnt from Maropeng This exhibit, at the Maropeng Visitor Centre, reflects the transformation from hominid to human being, over millions of years. Palaeontologists at Maropeng have, over the years, worked extremely hard to uncover the remarkable discoveries we are now able to learn from at Maropeng. This is a partial skull of an Australopithecus africanus that was discovered at the Sterkfontein Caves in 1947. This quote, engraved on a rock at the entrance to the Maropeng Visitor Centre, gives visitors much food for thought. As shown on the signifiers along the road, on the way into the centre, Maropeng is all about discovery, exploration, imagination and celebration.
