Celebrate the festive season in the Cradle of Humankind with Maropeng
If you’re in Gauteng this festive season make sure to head for the Cradle of Humankind for some serious fun with Maropeng.
Go back in time at Cooper’s Cave
For budding palaeontologists, Maropeng offers the rare opportunity to explore Cooper’s Cave. Only recently discovered, the site has revealed fossils dating back 1.5-million years that include several species of animals. A number of stone tools have also been revealed.
Enjoy an interactive fossil talk and a chance to explore the cave with palaeoanthropologist Christine Steininger. You’ll also get the opportunity to make your own stone tools. Don’t forget your hat, torch and comfortable clothes.
The tour starts at Sterkfontein Caves and includes a light picnic lunch.
Book online for December 10, 17, 20 and 22.
Search for answers with the Bone Detectives
Let Maropeng and Wits scientist Brendon Billings take you on an exciting journey of discovery with the fossils as your guide. Reconstruct history by comparing different hominid bones to help you understand the hominid anatomy.
The Bone Detectives tour allows you to participate in an interactive observation class, where you will be asked to identify and comment on different fossil species and then go on an extensive tour of Sterkfontein Caves with one of Maropeng’s award-winning tourist guides.
After your digging and discovering, enjoy a scrumptious buffet lunch overlooking the Cradle of Humankind.
