“The positive feedback we’ve received from visiting educators is an encouraging sign that we’re moving in the right direction in terms of our education focus,” he says.
His sentiments are echoed by visitor Angela Theron: “Wow, what a great experience. Everyone was so helpful and friendly and went out of their way to make our stay memorable. I was so impressed and will definitely book again.”
Queensburgh Girls’ High had this to say: “Maropeng and the caves exceeded our expectations. The food was excellent. The accommodation and bathrooms were fabulous. Thank you to management and all staff.”
With a rating of 99%, guest surveys of Maropeng’s facilities reveal a clear leader in Hominin House, followed closely by conference and events organisers on 92,4% and the Sterkfontein Caves Visitor Centre on 92.3%.
A year-on-year comparison reveals an increase of 11 percent in the number of learners visiting Maropeng, which makes the positive feedback even more significant. Statistics from August last year recorded 7 472 visitors from educational institutions, while the figure for August 2012 rose to 8 288.
This upward trend is likely to continue into the last quarter of 2012, with September and October following as traditionally busy months.
Maropeng’s Hominin House is a group accommodation facility situated in the grassy surrounds of the Visitor Centre. Built in 2005 to provide reasonably priced housing for out-of-town learners, it sleeps 120 with separate rooms for teachers.
In additional to comfortable lodgings and all meal requirements, Hominin House offers basketball, volleyball, football and table tennis facilities. On request special activities such as stargazing evenings are also provided at an additional cost.
