First Cooper’s Cave picnic – photo essay
The first Cooper’s Cave picnic was held on April 10, 2010, between Sterkfontein and Kromdraai. Led by palaeoanthropologist, Christine Steininger, this was no ordinary picnic. Christine is passionate about the work she does. She is the permit holder of Cooper’s Cave and took a few people on tour to see the surrounds and inside of Cooper’s Cave.
The tour starts, as everyone walks to the cave site.
Christine has her audience hanging on her every word as she talks about the history of the cave and her experiences there.
These children are eager to learn more about Cooper’s Cave. They have plenty of questions to ask Christine.
The children sit, enthralled, as Christine tells them about one of her first finds at Cooper’s Cave –a partially crushed facial skeleton of Paranthropus robustus.
Older members on the tour were also fascinated by Christine’s talk.

The group finally gets to Cooper’s Cave after much walking. Along with numerous fossil finds, the area boasts a wide variety of living animals as well.
After a long walk and much talking, it’s time for lunch!
