Five things to do at Maropeng to keep the children entertained during the school holidays
It’s already that time of the year again. School holidays are here and parents need to find activities to keep the children entertained.
If you’re looking for things to do, then Maropeng, the official visitor centre of the Cradle of Humankind, is the best place to visit. Here’s why:
1. Visit Maropeng’s interactive exhibition
It may be the school holidays, but that doesn’t mean your children’s minds cannot be stimulated. Maropeng’s interactive exhibition will take you and the kids on a journey through time, with games along the way to ensure they’re entertained.
Check out our exhibition guide here.
2. Explore the Sterkfontein Caves
Just 10km from Maropeng are the Sterkfontein Caves. This popular tourist attraction is famous for being the excavation site where a number of fossils of global importance have been discovered. You and the children will enjoy the fascinating tour through the caves while learning from one of the knowledgeable guides.
3. Teach your children about real-life heroes
Take the family on a trip through history. Walk among liberation giants and activists such as Nelson Mandela, Oliver Tambo and Helen Suzman at Maropeng, where the Long March to Freedom exhibition, with almost 100 striking life-sized bronze statues, is on display. This is a fantastic way for your children to learn about South Africa’s history as we celebrate 25 years of democracy this year.
4. Enjoy a picnic at Stone Park
Escape the rush of the city and enjoy some quality family time when you book a picnic basket and enjoy the beautiful Stone Park (please note: no outside food or beverages are permitted). The multifunctional space is the perfect place to spend the day unwinding and relaxing while the children run free to their hearts’ content. Why not let them bring a friend or two?
5. Treat your taste buds
Children can get a bit cranky and exhausted after exploring the Maropeng Visitor Centre, so how about a lunch stop? Enjoy a meal with spectacular views at Tumulus restaurant or, if you’re at the Sterkfontein Caves, grab a bite at the restaurant before or after your guided tour.
