Maropeng staff members help local school
Global citizens were called to donate 67 minutes of their time to helping the community in honour of Nelson Mandela – who spent 67 years working toward a greater good – on Mandela Day, July 18.
Maropeng’s management staff were keen to get involved in the initiative and chose to spend some time painting and cleaning at Maloney’s Eye, a rural primary school close to the Maropeng Visitor Centre.
More than a dozen staff members gathered to fix up the toilets at the school.
Magel van de Venter – who was actively involved in the upgrade – said that Maropeng staffers were on hand to clean up the area, paint the walls, tile the floor and fit the toilets with seats and lids.
Magel said she was “happy to be able to help” the students of Maloney’s Eye and she maintains that the work done by Maropeng staff members at the school was successful.
“We have also developed a vegetable garden on the school premises to ensure that they don’t eat mielie pap and soya meals everyday. Sometimes this is the only meal the learner will enjoy for the day,” said Magel.
The best part of the project according to Magel was that the project didn’t only support and uplift the learners from Maloney’s Eye school but, “it also allowed us take note of the needs of the community and staff around us and gave us an opportunity to get to know each other better,” she elaborated.
“It was great to be part of a team and achieve our goals,” added Magel.
