Swartkrans Walking Tour in photos
Looking to do something a little different this weekend? Why not try something completely out of your comfort zone – like venturing on a guided above- and below-ground tour of a world-famous fossil site?
Join Dr Morris Sutton on 23 November 2013 for a walking tour of Swartkrans, a fossil treasure trove listed under the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and usually closed to the public, that has yielded many well-known fossils, most notably the largest sample of Paranthropus robustus.
Swartkrans is also the site of discovery of the earliest evidence of man’s controlled use of fire in Southern Africa. In short, it’s the place where Africans held their very first braai, around 1-million years ago.
The walking tour kicks off at around 09h00 at Sterkfontein, where you’ll meet Dr Sutton and the rest of the walking crew. From here you’ll walk to Swartkrans and be guided on the fossil excavation process and how man’s early relatives may have lived and died within the Cradle.
The morning’s activities are rounded off with a light and delicious picnic lunch, served under the shade of the trees just outside the fossil site.
Sound like just your cup of tea? Then book your place today.
