Walking in the footsteps of the oldest footprints
Did you know that some of the oldest human trace fossil footprints in the world was found in the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape?
The 124 000-year-old human trace fossil footprints, believed to be those of a young child, was discovered in 1964. The person had walked through sea sand in a cave, and over time the footprints fossilised.
See a replica of the footprints at the Mercedes-Benz South Africa Coastal Education and Visitor Centre, which was built near to the cave where they were found. The centre has been built in the shape of a left foot, inspired by the footprints.
