A tour of our deep southern skies with Vincent Nettmann: 24 May 2014 at the Maropeng Hotel

Did you know that two-thirds of the stars we can see from Earth are concentrated in the southern region of the sky?

On a perfect moonless evening, large telescopes reveal the delicate structures of faraway objects, such as sparkling stars in the colourful “Jewel Box” cluster and clouds of stardust and gas in the Eta-Carina nebula, a stellar nursery.

On 24 May 2014, join Maropeng’s resident astronomer, Vincent Nettmann, at the Maropeng Hotel for an informative dinner talk, illustrated with spectacular astro-photo images.

Bring your binoculars along to participate on a laser guided sky tour (weather conditions permitting). Bring a jersey as the evenings can get chilly.

Should you wish to combine this event with a stay at the Maropeng Hotel, please contact Mmathabo Maine on +27 (0)14 577 9000 or mmathabom@maropeng.co.za to make a reservation.

After a splendid dinner, guests will gather in the lounge and enjoy an introduction to the world of fossils, bones and anthropology, presented by Brendon. Everyone then gets an opportunity to handle fossil and bone casts and discuss how bones inform an understanding of the evolution of man.
